Homesteading

Domain system rules from Chicago by Night (p. 55-57)

The Homesteading system represents the process of Kindred establishing domain in Chicago. Vampires carve out territory ranging from individual city blocks to entire neighborhoods, staking claims that determine their influence, feeding grounds, and political standing.

Homestead Traits

Portillon

The homestead's ability to keep intruders out and residents safe. A high Portillon means strong boundaries, whether through mortal security, supernatural wards, or simply a reputation that keeps trespassers away.

Luxury

The quality and comfort of the domain. Luxury represents the resources available within the territory, from lavish penthouses to well-maintained infrastructure that supports Kindred unlife.

Chasse

The hunting grounds within the territory. A high Chasse means a rich, accessible supply of mortals for feeding. This is often the most prized trait, as it directly supports a vampire's survival.

Scale

Block

The smallest unit of territory. A single city block or equivalent area. Easy to claim and hold, but limited in resources. Most neonates start at this scale.

Neighborhood

A larger territory covering several blocks. More resources and feeding opportunities, but harder to control and defend. Established ancillae often hold neighborhoods.

Sides

The largest territorial division, corresponding to Chicago's major areas (North Side, South Side, West Side). Only the most powerful elders or Princes lay claim to entire sides. These territories are usually subdivided among trusted vassals.

Using Homesteads in Play

When creating a coterie, players should work with the Storyteller to establish their initial domain. The total dots available depend on the coterie's starting Resources and political standing. Homestead traits can be improved through play by investing time, resources, and political capital. Conflicts over domain are a core driver of Kindred politics in Chicago.
